Through Yonsei University’s exchange program, I had the opportunity to intern at Professor Jinwoo Cheon’s laboratory this summer. Under the supervision of some graduate students, I was able to conduct experiments and analyze the data I collected with research instruments such as the TEM machine and the MRI machine. I was paired up with a lab partner and was able to work with the bio-imaging group of CEN. My lab partner and I synthesized nanoparticles to acquire high colloidal stability in aqueous biofluids and then modified the surfaces of the magnetic nanoparticles to make them hydrophilic. We also attached fluorescence to nanoparticles, created contrast agents, and took magnetic resonance images of the nanoparticles. Before coming to CEN, my knowledge of nanoparticles was extremely minimal. But by working in Professor Cheon’s laboratory, my knowledge in this field expanded as well as my interest in the sciences. This opportunity was truly one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had and the people I met through this internship were even more extraordinary. I wouldn’t change these past six weeks for the world.
