During the course of four weeks I have experienced and learned many aspects, skills, and knowledge through my involvement in the Center for Evolutionary Nanoparticles as an intern. The first week of the internship was mostly dedicated to reading and studying the theory behind the experimentations and understanding what kind of experiments this particular laboratory was focused on. Starting from the second week, my partner and I – under the instruction and supervision of our mentor/graduate student Sujin Kim – began experimenting with nanoparticles. We first began by synthesizing the magnetic nanoparticle (MNP), zinc-doped iron oxide. Also, we performed several surface modifications on the MNP such as coating it with DMSA and Silica. For each surface modification we analyzed the chemical species with transmission electron microscopy imaging and dynamic light scattering imaging. We also performed salt and pH tests on the MNP solutions with each surface modification to determine the stability of the nanoparticles in various environments. Additionally, we learned the process of distillation of oleic acid – the three-step process of activation, acquisition, and freeze-drying – as well as the process of purification of zinc-doped iron oxide. Also, my experience at the Center for Evolutionary Nanoparticles has not only been academic but also social. It is great to have the opportunity to socialize and learn with students all around the globe.
